In the morning, Mrs. Woods makes eggs, cinnamon rolls, and hot chocolate over the campfire. It is the most delicious breakfast I have ever had. “Food always tastes better in the outdoors,” she tells us. That is the first important thing I learn about camping.

After breakfast, we attend workshops to earn badges.

“Leaves of three, let it be” is the second thing I learn: how to identify poison ivy.

Everything is going surprisingly well. I haven’t choked on anything or seen any snakes. But then during the fire safety workshop, Mrs. Stahr sees my knife and takes it away so no one will be hurt. I’m so embarrassed! That stupid knife was already giving me trouble. On the drive over, it had managed to slip out of the protective towel and made a big hole in my trash bag (a.k.a. my sleeping-bag pouch).

That morning, everyone had quickly rolled her sleeping bag into a tight little ball and put it in the corner of the tent. I tried with all my strength. It compressed an inch and then bounced right back to its normal size. Carolyn and Howie tried to help me, but even the three of us together couldn’t roll it up. It just kept popping open like a life raft. We finally gave up and left it.

And that was the third thing I learned on my first-ever camping trip: avoid the Last Chance Clearance aisle at all costs.
